Vice City wasn't just gratuitously violent, it was expensively-produced. It was a place held together and made beautiful by violence, where you desired to be.Д¬irca 2002, when videogames were still culturally fringe, an idiosyncratic pastime rarely confluent with mainstream musical or celebrity names, the presence of songs and voices you recognised redoubled this effect. It wasn't just a place where violence paid. As well as benefiting some rich gangsters, a mathematical correlation between violence and success apparently made Vice City a kind of paradise, capable of giving you your nostalgia fix. They were voiced by Dennis Hopper, Lee Majors and Danny Dyer you played as Ray Liotta from Goodfellas. And the people with whom you pulled jobs вЂ“ your in-world friends вЂ“ were pop culture icons.

The radio stations you listened to played one hit after another all 80s killer, no filler.

Your cars in Vice City were all low-suspension sports models you'd seen before on aspirational TV shows, like Miami Vice or Starsky and Hutch. That's why Vice City was controversial, because it carried a truly amoral message: the more bad things you do, the more good you receive.ДЄnd the world founded on that precept вЂ“ the world where killing equalled material and personal enrichment вЂ“ also made that world look cool. The money you earn, also from killing, can be invested in nice big houses, or in businesses, which in turn earn you even more money.ДЄnd although, narratively, Vice City is a shameless and frankly disappointing variation on Scarface, right down to the interior dГ©cor of protagonist Tommy Vercetti's mansion, it doesn't end with the film's vital, quasi-redeeming moral message. In Vice City, the more missions you complete вЂ“ the more people you kill вЂ“ the fancier clothes and suits you unlock. The game has more indepth missions - rather than the rather mundane pickup > drop off > kill procedings of GTA3, much more engrossing tasks should be set.I'd call Vice City the first truly contentious Grand Theft Auto game, not because it contains more blood, more sex or more swearing (nobody says 'fuck' even once, the entire game) than any of its predecessors, but because it makes crime and violence look as if they pay, and pay well.

And, unlike GTA3, the character speaks - vocalised through the talents of Hollywood's Ray Liotta (famous for the superb gangster flicks Goodfellas and Muppets From Space).ДЄ whole host of added features were added to enhance gameplay. Set in the 80s, we were promised a whole new storyline based around our new hero, Tommy Vercetti, prior to the game's release. Character models were also given a new lease of life, now sporting much more detailed features overall. The camera was tweaked to aid movement on-foot - the camera fixes to an over-the-sholder view to easy targetting. Various other visual tweaks were made to the game. The world is generally much more colourful, too! The lighting system of the Renderware engine was also re-vamped, enabling real-time shadowing and reflections. Textures are in a higher resolution and the framerate has been increased. And look at the screenshots, the improvement in Vice City is clearly visible. Since then, the Renderware engine has been vastly improved.

However, many complained this wasn't good enough - blocky textures and nasty popups plagued both the PS2 and PC version. Rockstar programmers really tweaked this rather limited engine to its limits - and what they produced was quite remarkable for what the Renderware engine was actually cut out to do. Grand Theft Auto 3 was built around the Renderware engine.

And boy, did it do that! Below we give a summary of the major improvements that Vice City provided over its predecessors in the series. Vice City was hyped as a whole new game, not just a sequel, and we were promised it would blow our minds. And we didn't have to wait long for the next game to come our way.
